👨‍⚕️ Professional Representation & Use of the "Dr." Prefix

BPMA recommends that professional titles always reflect the practitioner's actual academic qualification and professional identity.

Where the prefix "Dr." is used, members are encouraged to clearly mention their professional designation immediately after their name, such as:

  • Dr. R. K. Sharma (Physiotherapist)
  • Dr. R. K. Sharma, PT

This promotes professional transparency and helps avoid misunderstanding regarding the practitioner's professional background or scope of practice. Members should ensure that patients and the public can clearly identify that they are consulting a Physiotherapist, unless the individual also possesses any other legally recognized professional qualification.

⚖️ General Professional Principles

  • Physiotherapy forms part of the Allied and Healthcare Professions framework established under the NCAHP Act, 2021.
  • Qualified physiotherapists should practise only within the scope permitted by applicable laws, professional standards, and their qualifications.
  • Physiotherapists should not perform activities that require authorization under any other applicable law unless separately qualified and legally authorized.
  • Professional qualifications, titles, and designations should always be presented honestly, accurately, and transparently.
  • Ethical practice, patient safety, professional accountability, and legal compliance should remain the foundation of professional practice.

🛡️ BPMA's Official Position

BPMA recognizes physiotherapists as healthcare professionals contributing significantly to rehabilitation, functional recovery, movement science, disability management, pain management, and quality of life.

BPMA encourages every member to:

  • Display academic qualifications clearly.
  • Mention the professional designation (Physiotherapist/PT), wherever appropriate.
  • Display applicable registration or membership details, where available.
  • Maintain ethical standards and professional integrity.
  • Practise strictly within the scope permitted under applicable laws.
